150 Years of Hope in France

One hundred and fifty years ago, a small Adventist community of around ten members officially established its first dedicated place of worship in France. This building was far more than a physical structure of roofs and walls; it embodied their aspiration to live out the ideals of their faith together, worship God, and bear witness to the hope that guided them.

From these modest beginnings to the more than 17,000 members that comprise the Adventist church in France today, the past century and a half reflects a legacy of faithfulness, perseverance, and growth. It preserves the memory of men and women who prayed, built, welcomed, and served. They accomplished this, often with limited resources but driven by a profound conviction that the Gospel is not proclaimed by words alone; it takes shape through an attentive, active presence in the world.

Consequently, these places of worship are designed to be open sanctuaries where neighborly love, human dignity, and freedom of conscience are actively practiced. Over time, this mission has given rise to schools, educational and community spaces for youth, Youth Alive centers, and humanitarian and social initiatives through ADRA, as well as programs dedicated to health, well-being, and balanced lifestyles.

This social and humanitarian commitment reflects and reinforces that enduring hope. The well-being of others remains a pillar of this faith. Motivated by the anticipation of Christ's return, the community rejects indifference and isolation, aiming instead to remain a bearer of hope by fostering patience, protecting individual freedom, and cultivating communities where the fruit of the Spirit can flourish.

An anniversary, therefore, extends beyond the act of reflecting with gratitude on the journey so far. It serves as an invitation to reaffirm the mission of determining what to build for future generations and defining the Christian presence to embody in a society continually searching for meaning, connection, and hope.

This special edition of the Revue Adventiste invites readers to discover or rediscover the depth of a Church that translates faith into daily service to others. It is designed to inspire gratitude, renew hope, and rekindle the drive for action. After one hundred and fifty years, the foundational vocation remains unchanged: awaiting the return of Christ together through active service, genuine love, and tangible hope.
