Sayei Mendez comes from Spain. She is 23 years old and passionate about Jesus and about the church. She runs a ministry, Bible Journaling, that you can find on facebook and Instagram .
Through bible journaling you can get creative with your Bible time; you can learn different bible study methods and also creative techniques, such as hand lettering, scrapbooking, bible tabs or basic illustrations. All of this, you can do with guides and printables, but also while learning to create your own pieces, from sketching to inking. You don’t need to have any art skills.
The point is to enrich your quiet time with God, document what you are learning and document how He is working in your life.
In an interview with Pedro Torres, Sayei explained that ‘in my workshop at the Youth Congress, I gave tips and suggestions on how to make posts and devotionals about Christian values and about the gospel. It is about offering the Christian message in an artistic and visual way.”
“Bible journaling is an artistic response to God’s message,” continued Sayei. “You can paint your bible pages…create beautiful things with your bible and in your bible. Colors and images will inspire you and help you to memorize also bible verses. That will make you feel more connected to God.”
Asked about the feedback at the Youth Congress, she responded: “The feedback was great. Many people came to ask me for more details about this project. They find it inspiring and useful. I am very happy about this workshop.”
“How can your workshop improve lives of those who attend it?” asked Torres. “It helps you to live your Christian life in a creative and interesting way,” answered Sayei. "Sometimes a Christian life can get boring for the youth. Living our Christian faith in an artistic way is a cool and trendy and an original way to live your spirituality. It is also a testimony for others if you share your faith with creativity – especially on social media,” concluded Sayei.
When asked about the relationship between arts and faith, Sayei answered that “many people think that art is not so important in spiritual life. It’s beautiful but doesn’t fit to faith. We forget that God is a God of creation, he inspires thoughts and ideas.”
“What is your dream?” asked Torres, concluding his interview. “My dream is that we will value arts in church,” explained Sayei. “Arts can be a big help for mission. You can share God’s message even without words, through visual images. I dream of a colorful and joyful church! Trying to see beyond what is written, trying to catch the character of God!”
