After a long and extenuating electoral campaign, American entrepreneur Donald Trump has been elected 45th President of the United States of America.

The result was, for a majority of the media and the American citizens, a surprise, given that almost all the polls predicted a win for the contending Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in the Jamaica Estates in Queens, a suburb of New York; he is the fourth of five children and the second of three sons.

Trump is of German ancestry on his father’s side and Scottish ancestry on his mother’s side; the original family surname was Drumpf, but it evolved into Trump in the 17th century. Trump is noted multiple times as being proud of his German origins.

For decades, Trump has been a notable entrepreneur and builder, along with being active in show business. A billionaire, he is listed among the richest men in the world with a net worth of around 4 billion dollars.

After being criticised for certain declarations and taking controversial positions during the electoral campaign, in his victory speech, Mr. Trump called for national reconciliation and said he will be a President for all Americans.

“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division; we have to come together. To all Republicans, Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as a united people. It’s time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be a President for all Americans, and this is very important to me.”

The Inter-European Division's Public Relations Department issued the following statement:

"We pray that God may bless the United States of America and its newly elected President with the strength, wisdom, vision, and all the skills needed, to lead this nation - that has played a central role in global issues in this last century - succesfully. America and the World are facing unprecedented challenges, today more than ever.

Our most sincere desire is that President-elect Trump will advocate for universal values, human rights and for global Dignity."
