The Friedensau Day Care center, operated by the Advent-Wohlfahrtswerk e.V. (AWW), recently celebrated its first anniversary. The facility first opened its doors on October 7, 2024.
The day care is located in a building that previously served as the Archaeological Museum and Archive of the Friedensau Adventist University near Magdeburg. Following a comprehensive core renovation by the AWW Friedensau Nursing Home, a modern and welcoming space for the elderly was created, which now welcomes up to 16 guests daily.
Lothar Scheel, responsible for communication and public relations at AWW, reported that much has evolved since the opening. A team of six dedicated female employees ensures a personal and family-like atmosphere every day. Rather than anonymous care, guests experience appreciation, attention, and a diverse community environment.
To make attending the day care as simple as possible, the facility offers its own transport service, which picks up guests from their homes in the morning and returns them in the afternoon. The core of the program focuses on daily structure, group activities, and social participation. This includes sports sessions led by the in-house physiotherapist, group games, excursions, creative activities, or simply socializing. For quiet moments, there is a cozy relaxation room equipped with beds and recliner chairs, as well as other areas for retreat.
The highlights of the first year included various excursions, such as a visit to the MDR state broadcasting house in Magdeburg, coffee at an ostrich farm, or a relaxing day at "Lieblingsplatz" in Parey. Additionally, the day care regularly invites interesting guests—such as a beekeeper who shared fascinating insights into the world of bees.
The costs of the day care are fully covered by long-term care insurance funds (Pflegekassen), without any deductions from other benefits like outpatient care. The personal contribution for guests is 20.91 euros per day—including transport and full catering—making the service a valuable and affordable support for many families.
