The Portuguese, Antonio Guterres, is the new Secretary General of Onu. The nomination of Ban Ki-moon’s successor, who will become full-time from January 1st, 2017, came by acclamation within the Security Council. Now it will be ratified at the General Assembly of the Palazzo di Vetro (Glass Palace).Born in Lisbon 67 years ago, Antonio Guterres was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. He led his country’s Socialist Party ever since 1992, while from 1999 to 2005 he was President of the Socialist International. While working for the United Nations, Guterres served as High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), from 2005 to 2015.Corrado Cozzi, Director of Communications for the Inter-European region of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (EUD), declared: “In the Bible, Paul invites us to pray for our authorities and that is what we will do. Between refugees escaping; social injustices in every category; terrorism; wars; violence and abuse, especially towards women and minors; just as his predecessors, he (Antonio Guterres) will have a heavily loaded agenda. May the Lord give him the wisdom needed to contribute to the solutions of peace and unconditional respect.”“A special thanks goes to Antonio Guterres’ predecessor, Ban Ki-Moon, for his commitment in searching for a solution to the thousands of problems that the world is going through, and thanks, also, to Antonio Gutteres for accepting this enormous challenge,” concluded Corrado Cozzi.

"Allow us to congratulate you on behalf of the members of Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the Inter-European Region on your election as the Secretary General of the United Nations", so the Public Relations Department of the Inter-European Division. "We are confident that under your guidance and leadership the United Nations will pursue effective ways to address the challenges our world is facing."
