Terrorism, economic crisis, social crisis – gigantic migration flows. The proverbial European stability is in danger and the European population is reacting with fear.
European citizens appear, for the most part, disoriented and confused. The vision of a prosperous and peaceful Europe is clouded by serious and great doubts.
Fear of the future and of the next person, uncertainty about personal rights and social welfare, fear for one's life and a cohabitation with terror and terrorism: all these put together could easily trigger one's basic instincts. There is, therefore, the danger of adopting extremist perspectives and a risk of making radical choices that are dictated by a natural instinct for survival.
Europe is being strongly drawn towards extreme political proposals that are resting on fragile bases of fear, and insecurity. Across the continent - in almost all european countries - extremists are on the march.
We hope and pray that our leaders may use wisdom, steadiness and empathy in understanding the concerns of the citizens. We pray that, as European citizens, we may regain faith and hope. We pray that the spirits of hate and division may not prevail in our hearts and minds.
May the Lord help citizens and institutions alike to work together, with enthusiasm and passion, in order that the dignity of every person may be preserved, so that no one is left behind.
